Lovely mix of topics this morning, Heather. I always learn things I didn't even know I wanted to know! A sweet sweet yellow dog that I got a little rabbit holed on. That gorgeous photo of the train made me pine to be on it -- and I don't even care what the destination is. Just something about trains... And as for Nyad, I don't think will watch that one. I have lived by the sea my entire life and the power and unpredictability of the water still scares me. I wouldn't dream of swimming beyond the breakers. Thanks, as always, for a fine Friday wake-up!
What’s your favorite musical instrument? Electric violin? A group I listen to, Alter Bridge, has a member that plays that instrument, and it makes their music that much cooler. Oh, and cellos. Espesh the way the guys in Apocalyptica play them.
Can you imagine the interesting people you’d meet on the Hurricane Turn? Who here has been to Alaska? Where? The fact that you can FLAG DOWN A FUCKIN' TRAIN somewhere on this earth is still blowing my mind. Like you're flaggin' a taxi in New Yawk or somethin'. No biggie. But that sounds incredibly awesome and would make for good writing material. I imagine that would be a great meet-cute for a shifter romance. I've never been to Alaska and though I hear it's beautiful, I don't do cold, 30 days of night, or 30 days of light. LOL
Hat tip to Noelie for his lettuce expertise. What other ideas do you have for prolonging produce? My sister sent me an IG reel about this not too long ago. I no longer by store-bought lettuce in a bag, but even when I buy it in a bag from the farmers market, I do rinse it/store it in one of those salad spinner things. Def makes my leaves fresher and last longer. I also learned that bananas last longer when you wash the skin and then wrap a damp paper towel around the stem.
As a former competitive swimmer, I can’t imagine swimming 103 miles through shark infested waters. Do you like swimming in the ocean? Surfing? Boating? Swam in the ocean for the first time several years ago when my family visited Kauai. My parents have a timeshare in Hawai'i and Mr. Ex and I did an excursion that included stopping to swim in the ocean. In the MIDDLE of the fucking ocean. I did NOT like it whatsoever. Didn't feel safe at all. But good on Annette for not wanting stunt doubles. #badass
Thanks for telling me about Alter Bridge. I hadn't heard of them. Myles Kennedy has a beautiful voice! I couldn't find one of their songs where they are using the electric violin, but I loved listening to their music.
Hmmm, didn't know that about bananas. I'll give that a try. I've ended up cutting the bananas into small pieces and freezing them. Good for a smoothie.
We went scuba diving years ago...went down about 90 feet and ended up swimming over some nurse shark. They said they aren't dangerous. Didn't stop me from being scared lol!
I actually used to listen to people playing kalimbas when we lived in Zimbabwe. Loved it. I also really enjoyed the guitar playing style. Here’s a sample:
System Tazvida - so good. Thank you! Sort of Jamaican or Hawaiian but not exactly. Bill and I have enjoyed listening. I don't know what they are saying, but it puts me in the good mood.
Ghengis Khan and his Harley Hordes. Some people might be off put by the toxic masculinity and others might enjoy embracing the colorful and diverse traditions of exotic ethnic peoples:
Probably not a steady diet for me, but I love listening to different kinds of music from different countries. It always seems like it's a window into the culture. I really appreciate you sharing these. I would never have discovered them on my own.
Soooo, wouldn't it be sweet to expose everyone in After 21 Club to some of this music? Would you mind if I wrote about it for next Friday's post? (Even better, perhaps you'd like to write about it?) I'm thinking a little bit of history and youtube inserts. I did poke around about throat singing and found a few other clips that aren't quite as intimidating....but yours is definitely attention getting!
The Harleys were an excellent touch. Now, when I think about the Mongol hoards sweeping across the Eurasian steppes, I always visualize the tall guy with the Mohawk riding a Fatboy with weed burner pipes.
Wow. The clothing is fantastic. Trying to figure out that instrument that looks like a cow skull turned into a cello ish sort of thing. And what's the mouth piece instrument?
Nyad was good. A little long for my taste - she made multiple attempts at the crossing. She must be quite a character - they didn't hold back on showing her personality!
As usual, you never fail to entertain. I loved the dog video, which is not surprising. I love all things dog-related. Flagging down a train is a topic one can only discover if one goes deep into the rabbit hole, so thank you for that deep dive.
However, you hit it out of the park on the topic of iceberg lettuce. I grew up on that lettuce. Whether there were any other options was irrelevant because my mom never bought them. So now you have me hungering for iceberg when I have mostly standardized on Romaine. I am going to the store this weekend to recapture a moment of my childhood. Thank you!
Oh yes, Mbira - that would make an awesome Scrabble word! Thank, Mitch.
Well, your tip really isn't silly at all. And I hope you enjoy CK Steefel.
Like you, I'm more of a toes in the sand person. I love to collect sand dollars. Sometimes that requires wading out a little deeper.... but not much!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the mish mash this week!
My Dad and I used to go shelling a lot. I'm keeping up the tradition as best as possible without him.

Thought this might strike a chord with you.😁

Here’s some rather ethnic traditional fusion music from Siberia I enjoy:

Here’s the Hu, who are a traditional Mongolian throat singing fusion group:

Ghengis Khan and his Harley Hordes. Some people might be off put by the toxic masculinity and others might enjoy embracing the colorful and diverse traditions of exotic ethnic peoples:

And more Hu that reminds me of a cross between Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, Rammstein, and something from Predator / Alien.
Generally, my friends don’t prefer my playlists. Too ethnic, they say.

Eeeeps. That throat singing is incredible! I definitely had a sense of foreboding, but the words explain the power of the song. Very cool.
The Harleys were an excellent touch. Now, when I think about the Mongol hoards sweeping across the Eurasian steppes, I always visualize the tall guy with the Mohawk riding a Fatboy with weed burner pipes.
Ha Ha. Well, that's not exactly how I envisioned them but what do I know!
Wow. The clothing is fantastic. Trying to figure out that instrument that looks like a cow skull turned into a cello ish sort of thing. And what's the mouth piece instrument?
The sound is addictive!
I've never heard anything like this one. Thanks!
Maybe a horse skull? Oh dear, I'm down the rabbit hole....
Nice...Fun...the movie looks pretty good..."I don't believe in imposed limitations..."
Nyad was good. A little long for my taste - she made multiple attempts at the crossing. She must be quite a character - they didn't hold back on showing her personality!

What a fun moment for iceberg lettuce! And a cute story about your childhood! Enjoy your weekend, Jill!
